PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Innova Global was selected by LG Constructors, a subsidiary of CH2M Hill, to design, fabricate, erect and guarantee the noise control for the Empire Generating Project, a 535 MW combined-cycle natural gas fired power plant. II was one of the first projects to be accepted into New York State’s voluntary Brownfield Cleanup Program.

SCOPE OF WORK

Innova’s scope included acoustical consulting services and design, supply and install of:

  • One (1) acoustic Steam Turbine building
  • One (1) acoustic Combustion Turbine building housing two turbines
  • Two (2) acoustic Fuel Gas Compressor buildings
  • Two (2) sound barrier walls for pipe racks and HRSGs
  • Steel Pipe Rack
  • Steel decking: Two (2) mezzanines in STG building
  • Miscellaneous metals as specified by client
  • Two (2) 248’ HRSG stacks complete with silencers

ACOUSTICAL REQUIREMENTS

Innova guaranteed that the Empire Generating Project would comply with noise limits within the EPC contract .  As well, the facility was to meet a spatial averaged near field noise level of 85 dBA or less when measured at a horizontal distance of three (3) feet from major equipment surfaces, at a height of five (5) feet above grade or operating floor and the following limits across the octave bands

NOISE SOURCES

The major noise sources included:

  • Two (2) fuel General Electric 7FA gas turbine generator packages
  • One (1) ALSTOM steam turbine generator unit Three (3) GSU transformers
  • Two (2) auxiliary transformers
  • One (1) plume abatement cooling tower

SILENCING SOLUTIONS

Turbine Building

  • Secondary steel (girts, purlins and framed openings including support and openings for MUA units);
  • ATCO proprietary acoustic wall and roof assemblies;
  • ATCO proprietary acoustic personnel doors;
  • Acoustic rollup doors; and
  • Custom designed major components for acoustic ventilation system.
Two (2) Pump Buildings (20'-0" Wide x 75'-0" Long x 12'-0" High)
  • Pre-engineered structural frame buildings c/w secondary steel;
  • ATCO proprietary acoustic wall and roof assemblies;
  • ATCO proprietary acoustic personnel doors;
  • Acoustic rollup doors; and
  • Major components for custom designed acoustic ventilation systems
Additional Noise Mitigation
  • Two (2) HRSG stack silencers;
  • Two (2) HRSG acoustic barriers, encompassing the pipe racks;
  • One (1) HRSG  transition shroud.

RESULTS

The project was completed in October 2010 with post construction testing verifying site compliance to the noise criteria.
